Blessing
A blessing that flowed from the beginning through generations of failures and struggle straight to us today.
Genesis 1:22 – Adam and Eve
22 And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.”
Genesis 9:1 – Noah
And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.
Genesis 12:2-3 – Abram
2 And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
Genesis 26: 3-5 – Isaac
3 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with you and will bless you, for to you and to your offspring I will give all these lands, and I will establish the oath that I swore to Abraham your father. 4 I will multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and will give to your offspring all these lands. And in your offspring all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, 5 because Abraham obeyed my voice and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.”
Genesis 18:17-18 – to all the nations of the earth
17 The Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do, 18 seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?
The blessing started with Adam and continued down the line of God’s people. It was promised to God’s people and through them to all the nations of the earth. Even when humans failed, God continued to make this promise of blessing. The blessing was a promise of fruitfulness and multiplication. This meant that we would have family and communion, and we would live this earthly life in community, without loneliness. It was a blessing of Eden’s abundance, meaning that we would lack nothing that we needed. This blessing was for a people who would keep his word and be faithful. And even when humans made mistakes, God provided a way towards that blessing again. He would forgive and restore. That blessing is for all of us.
This is a God whose very name is Love. He loves us greatly and wants all these good things for us. But we live in a world that we ourselves have broken, and we need to endure and love each other while we wait for his return and for our full blessing to come. So let’s endure, holding onto Him while we wait.
