Enoch Knew God

Enoch Knew God

June 3, 2021 Vani De Freitas Comments 4 comments

Enoch had much favour with God. He had so much favour that God did not allow him to die. Shouldn’t we all want what Enoch had? Shouldn’t we all want that kind of favour from God? Enoch pleased God, he walked with God, and he had faith in God. How can we do the same? What does the Bible tell us about Enoch?

Genesis 5:22 and 24

Enoch walked with God after he fathered Methuselah 300 years and had other sons and daughters. Thus, all the days of Enoch were 365 years. … Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him.

The Bible tells us that Enoch walked with God, and he did not die.

So, what does “walked with God “mean? It means:

•             Manner of life – walking according to God’s ways

•             Conversant – knowledge – having familiarity with God

•             Having a strong relationship with God

•             Having an interpersonal bond with God

Based on this meaning, we can see that Enoch had a great familiarity with God, he knew who God was, and he had a relationship with God.

A look at the cross-reference verses for “walked with God” helps us grasp the phrase’s meaning even more.

The first cross-reference verse for “walked with God” is:

Micah 6:8

He has told you, O man, what is good;
and what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,[b]
and to walk humbly with your God?

This verse speaks about what is required of man, and it says we are to walk humbly with God. So, walking with God is a requirement that God wants from us. Additionally, the term “What is required of you” in this verse cross-references to Deuteronomy 10:12.

Deuteronomy 10:12

And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

This verse speaks about fearing the Lord and walking in all His ways. And how do we walk in all His ways? We can only walk in His ways by knowing His ways. To know His ways, we need to seek the word and know it. God told Joshua not only to read the word but to meditate on it day and night. The word is to be continuously read day and night, and then we will be enabled to walk according to His ways.

Joshua 1:8

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

The other cross-reference verse for “walked with God” is:

Malachi 2:6

True instruction was in his mouth, and no wrong was found on his lips. He walked with me in peace and uprightness, and he turned many from iniquity.

This verse speaks about the priest having true instruction in his mouth, and he walks with God in peace and uprightness. True instructions here refer to the law and the word of God. And the fact that he has the true instruction in his mouth implies that he knows it or is familiar with it and is ready to speak it at any time. Again, walking with God is associated with knowing the word of God.

So, Enoch had this great familiarity and relationship with God, and this was probably because he spent time getting to know God. He knew God and knew God’s ways, and he lived according to it. And from these verses, we can see that walking with God is associated with knowing God.

Enoch had Faith

Hebrews 11:5-6

By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken, he was commended as having pleased God. And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

And the author of Hebrews tells us that by faith, Enoch was taken up and did not die. Hebrews emphasizes that Enoch pleased God and that without faith, it is impossible to please God. So, Enoch pleased God, and therefore, he had faith.

Enoch knew who God was, and he believed. But how did Enoch know? How did Enoch get this familiarity with God that he walked with Him? How did he have such faith in God? He spent time with God.

How can we get to know God and have faith in Him?

  1. Daily spending time meditating on the Word of God (not just reading)
  2. Spending time talking with God (prayer). Learning to hear His voice.
  3. Spending time in community with God’s people getting to know what God is doing in their lives. Hearing testimonies of God.

Through these measures of getting to know God, our faith grows (So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. – Romans 10:17) as the word reminds us that faith comes from hearing the word of God. And as we get to know God, we learn His ways and what He requires of us, which brings us closer to being able to walk with Him as Enoch did.
