Fear Not

Fear Not

November 4, 2021 Vani De Freitas Comments 6 comments

It is so easy to find ourselves trapped in a deep ocean of fear. Our minds have the ability to move us from (what feels like a) secured place to a place of tremendous, crippling fear. Even when we know the truth that God is here for us, He is greater than anything we can fear and that he did not give us a spirit of fear but of power, love and self-control (2 Timothy 1:7), we can still find ourselves covered in the doubts that bring fear.

Psalm 27

The Lord is my light and my salvation;
    whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life;
    of whom shall I be afraid?

2 When evildoers assail me
    to eat up my flesh,
my adversaries and foes,
    it is they who stumble and fall.

3 Though an army encamp against me,
    my heart shall not fear;
though war arise against me,
    yet I will be confident.

One of the things we can do to help us combat this is the word of God. Psalm 27 reminds us that there is nothing that we need to fear, for God is our salvation, stronghold and light. But even though we have read this before, when things get rough, we push it aside and find the doubts, allow it to consume our minds and end up in fear.

But we need to read it all the time, reminding ourselves of the truth in his word. The Psalmist says to hide his word in our hearts (Psalm 119:11). And God told Joshua that the word should not depart from his mouth and that he should meditate on it day and night (Joshua 1:8). The word meditate gives us the idea of spending time on it, thinking it over and pondering its meaning.

If we let his word of truth consume our minds, how will we have time to let the doubts consume us. We won’t let them, and less likely will we fear anything. If we let the word remind us of how incredible our God is, we will realize that we have nothing to fear because nothing can conquer Him, and He is always for us. Only the word being constantly in our hearts and minds can convince us of this. So how do we constantly keep it in our hearts and minds? We spend time reading and meditating on it. We think of studying our bible as essential and more important than anything else we have to do. We read it daily and even many times a day. We let it circle our minds; we ponder on it, we pray about it and ask God to reveal it. So let us be in the bible as much as we can and toss out those doubts that bring fear for good.

    So much we take for granted that we forget to pay attention to those things that would keep us in a place of peace and confidence.
