God Calls the Least
It is so easy to think that I am nobody and there is nothing special about me. To think that there are so many people better than I. Many have great talents, who prosper in much and who are favoured by many. It is so easy to think of myself as weak, and I cannot do it.
Moses told God that he could not do it so many times. Gideon did not believe God was calling him. Saul said he was from the least tribe, and David was the least in front of his big and strong brothers. Often God calls the least of us. He calls us, and we tend to think that we cannot do it. We are afraid of stepping up to His call, and we miss out on what God is calling us to. We can miss out on how much we can learn and grow when we believe that God is the one who gives us the ability and not us. The truth is we are worthless without Him, but the problem is when we do not believe that God will strengthen us and give us all that we need to do what He has called us to do.
But He will. He definitely will.
Moses
Exodus 3:9-12
And now, behold, the cry of the people of Israel has come to me, and I have also seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them. Come, I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.”But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?”He said, “But I will be with you, and this shall be the sign for you, that I have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain.”
Exodus 4:10-12
But Moses said to the Lord, “Oh, my Lord, I am not eloquent, either in the past or since you have spoken to your servant, but I am slow of speech and of tongue.” Then the Lord said to him, “Who has made man’s mouth? Who makes him mute, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall speak.”
Moses didn’t believe that he could do it; he did not believe even when God told him that He would be with him. How many times are we like Moses, and we do not believe the truth that God is our strength. Do we believe in the promises of God, and do we believe in who God is? Moses had so much fewer experiences and testaments of God than we do. We have the word that tells us who He is, and we have many countless testimonies of God showing us who He is and what He is capable of doing. We have the Holy Spirit with us always. Why is it so hard for us to believe Him?
Gideon
Judges 6:11-18
Now the angel of the Lord came and sat under the terebinth at Ophrah, which belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, while his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress to hide it from the Midianites. And the angel of the Lord appeared to him and said to him, “The Lord is with you, O mighty man of valor.” And Gideon said to him, “Please, my Lord, if the Lord is with us, why then has all this happened to us? And where are all his wonderful deeds that our fathers recounted to us, saying, ‘Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt?’ But now the Lord has forsaken us and given us into the hand of Midian.”And the Lord turned to him and said, “Go in this might of yours and save Israel from the hand of Midian; do not I send you?”And he said to him, “Please, Lord, how can I save Israel? Behold, my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.” And the Lord said to him, “But I will be with you, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man.” And he said to him, “If now I have found favor in your eyes, then show me a sign that it is you who speak with me. Please do not depart from here until I come to you and bring out my present and set it before you.” And he said, “I will stay till you return.”
Gideon had only heard of God from his fathers before him, but he had not experienced God, so no wonder he asked the question of where God’s wonderful deeds were, seeing that the Midianites were oppressing them. Gideon did not believe that God could use him to save Israel, given that his clan was the weakest, and he was the least in his father’s house. Gideon eventually went on to be used by God to conquer the Midianites and free Israel. Gideon trusted God and was obedient to His commands, and this led to success.
Saul
1 Samuel 9:15-21
Now the day before Saul came, the Lord had revealed to Samuel:”Tomorrow about this time I will send to you a man from the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him to be prince over my people Israel. He shall save my people from the hand of the Philistines. For I have seen my people, because their cry has come to me.” When Samuel saw Saul, the Lord told him, “Here is the man of whom I spoke to you! He it is who shall restrain my people.” Then Saul approached Samuel in the gate and said, “Tell me where is the house of the seer?” Samuel answered Saul, “I am the seer. Go up before me to the high place, for today you shall eat with me, and in the morning I will let you go and will tell you all that is on your mind.As for your donkeys that were lost three days ago, do not set your mind on them, for they have been found. And for whom is all that is desirable in Israel? Is it not for you and for all your father’s house?”Saul answered, “Am I not a Benjaminite, from the least of the tribes of Israel? And is not my clan the humblest of all the clans of the tribe of Benjamin? Why then have you spoken to me in this way?”
Even though Saul eventually went rogue from God and did things his way, which resulted in God rejecting him, God called Saul to be the first King of Israel. When Saul was first called, he recognized that he was an unlikely choice as he was from the least tribe of Benjamin.
David
1 Samuel 16:10-13
And Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen these.” Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your sons here?” And he said, “There remains yet the youngest,[a] but behold, he is keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and get him, for we will not sit down till he comes here.” And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him, for this is he.” Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.
David, too when God called him to be king, the Bible tells that he was the least of all his brothers. He was so insignificant that he was the one sent to tend to sheep while the others went to fight in the army. David was not even considered worthy to be brought in front of the man of God (Samuel) when he asked for all of Jess’s sons.
David went on to follow God faithfully, and God blessed him and his family for generations to come. Jesus came through the family of David. What a blessing!
1 Kings 15:4-5
Nevertheless, for David’s sake the Lord his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem, setting up his son after him, and establishing Jerusalem, because David did what was right in the eyes of the Lord and did not turn aside from anything that he commanded him all the days of his life, except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.
So many of the people that God called and used were not worthy and were not able, but God made them worthy and gave them all they needed to do the task. So let us consider this, mediate on it, never think that God cannot use us and realize that with God, we are worthy.
We are worth so much to Him.
