He walked with God
The Bible speaks about several people walking with God or walking before God and it tells us that these people were blessed in significant ways. I think this is the goal, that we should all want to walk with him.
We get the first account of God walking in the garden looking for Adam. We get the idea that God used to often walk with Adam and Eve in the garden. But Adam and Eve messed up that wonderful opportunity to walk with God and they were sent away from the garden and away from his presence. So, in God’s ideal world, we were supposed to have this wonderful fellowship with God walking with Him in his perfect garden.
This makes me think about our own common experiences with walking in communion with one another. We all at some point in time may have taken a scenic walk with a close friend. There’s something so satisfying about having that time to talk with someone and just really listen to them or have them listen to us. How understood we feel when someone takes an interest in us and really gives us positive and uplifting feedback. And it’s great when we can give that to someone else. It gives us so much joy when we can just laugh together or share a smile. When we walk in a place of beauty and scenery its just that icing on the cake making it so much more beautiful. I think this is a snippet of how beautiful it would be to walk with God in Eden.
When God created Adam and gave him a paradise to live in, he treated him like a friend. He communed with him and we can imagine what a great gem that was. We are supposed to have fellowship like that with God.
There are places in the bible where it speaks about someone who walked with God. That statement gives the idea that this was a choice by that person. You can also see that the people who chose to continue to walk with God received great reward and blessings.
God walked with Adam and Eve from what we can interpret from the Bible. The Bible tells us that Enoch walked with God and then God took him i.e. he did not die (Genesis 5:21-24). How amazing is that? Noah was righteous, blameless and he walked with God (Genesis 6:9). Noah was saved, and God made a covenant with him. Abraham walked with God and God blessed him and made a covenant with him (Genesis 17:1-3). Isaac also walked before God (Genesis 48:15).
God even walked with his people after he rescued them out of Egypt. (Exodus 21:13) He gave them the ark of the covenant so that his presence was with them but they eventually messed that up too.
But all the failures of God’s people, where they destroyed that opportunity to walk with him, only point us more to Jesus. God provided a way for us to be able to walk with him anytime we choose.
The wonderful advantage that we have is that God knows that we cannot make it on our own. We need his help to choose to walk with him. And so, once we have that desire to walk with him, we only need to come to him and tell him. We need to invest that time with him and choose him and not let the world distract us from him. Let’s make that our priority, to walk with him each and everyday.
