Music
I know that I love music. I have recently enjoyed singing to my baby girl and find myself singing even after she falls asleep. I have always loved listening to music, and when I hear the right song, I feel like music affects me in a profound way that I cannot understand. But when I gave my life to God, I realized that I didn’t want to continue listening to random music from people who didn’t know God. I knew that since music was something that could affect me so deeply, I didn’t want to continue to consume secular music. I’m not saying that I think it’s wrong; I’m just saying I prefer not to, just in case it negatively impacts me and my relationship with God.
The Bible tells us that David played music to help Saul be well from something described as an evil spirit (1 Samuel 16:14-23). This just added to the justification that there is more to listening to music than we understand. But this had me wondering what else the Bible says about music.
The Bible repeatedly speaks of singing praises to God (Psalm 98.4; Psalm 27:6; Psalm 57:7; 1 Chronicles 25:6-7; 1 Chronicles 6:31-32). The Bible encourages us to give thanks in songs to God (Psalm 33:2; Judges 5:3; Ephesians 5:19-20). We are encouraged to teach and caution in Psalms, hymns and spiritual songs (Colossians 3:16). The Bible tells us that God gives songs in the night (Job 35:10). He is our creative ability. The Bible outlines this purpose for music.
Singing songs of God and what he has done does so much for us. It uplifts us when we are down; it reminds us of God’s goodness and strength. Many things in the world distract us and pull our time and attention. Worship can help us focus and inspire us to remove those distractions. So, what if songs of a different nature do the opposite? Can it distract us and put us in a place that’s further away from God? Perhaps! For me, I don’t want to risk it. I prefer to choose the things that help me to draw closer to God, remove those distractions and be inspired to dive into the word of God where I can learn more about God and the mission that he has for me.
So, I choose to listen to music from kingdom people. Music to me is uplifting, a reminder of my Lord and that I should praise him. Music shares the testimonies of others of what God has done. Music encourages me and surrounds me with the thoughts of Him. I know someone who says “why take a chance with your salvation if you are unsure”. I agreed; I’m not willing to take that chance, so better be sure than sorry.

This piece resonates with me Vani, because I too loves music and it can affect me depending on the song. Thus I purposely listen to Godly songs where I am focused on God and His word during my day. Blessings my dear.
Happy to hear that. Thank you.
Well, I like this piece, I endorse it wholeheartedly and and agree that if godly music(God Centred music) affects us positively, it stands to reason that (otherwise Centred music) can affect us negatively. We need to be aware of these facts and choose prayerfully what we listen to. Thank you Vani. Well done, again
Thank you, I very much appreciate your endorsement. 🙂
