Remembrance of the Lord
I have realised that it is so easy to drift away from the truth about what God has done for me, who God is, what He is capable of and who I am in Him. I have realised that I need to have a constant reminder of these important truths.
I have also realised that God reminds us, but many times we do not pay attention. The Bible tells us that the word of God is profitable for so much (2 Timothy 3:16), and so we should continuously read and study the word. God told Joshua not to let the word depart from his mouth, to meditate on it day and night so that he will do what is written (Joshua 1:8). I know that this is an instruction to us also. We should know God’s word so that we can follow it. And I believe that He is telling us to meditate on it all the time. We are so susceptible to drift away from God because we live in a world full of things that are not of God but are quite attractive. So, let us fill our minds with God himself, starting with His word.
Israel Needed A Reminder
Israel neglected, so many times, what God was capable of and what He had done for them. God brought Israel out of Egypt and saved them from the Egyptians by parting the sea. Soon after seeing what an incredible miracle God had done, they responded as if they had forgotten. On the very next time they had a need, they needed water; they grumbled against God as if they did not believe God could provide that water. Regardless of their response, the Lord came through and provided water for them. (Exodus 15).
They also grumbled at Moses when they were hungry, asking him if he had brought them in the wilderness to kill them. Again, disregarding that the God of the heavens and the earth was the one who brought them out and would provide for them. And God did provide by raining bread (manna) from heaven for them, day and night. God also ensured that their clothes and shoes did not wear. He took care of their every need.
When Moses took a long time to come back from visiting God on the Mountain, the people of Israel disrespected God and departed from all that He had done, and they made a god for themselves. They made a golden calf and declared that this was the God who brought them out of Israel (Exodus 32:1-6). They declared lies. Did they just forget who really brought them out? This seems so crazy that they would do this, but we can often find ourselves falling into the same pattern.
Moses’ Reminder in the Wilderness
Moses told the people of Israel to remember the whole way that God had led them for forty years in the wilderness that He might humble them. He reminded them of all that God had done for them. That God had fed them, He made their clothes not wear, and He had brought them out of Egypt into a good land (Deuteronomy 8:1-10). Moses warned them not to take all the Lord’s blessings and then forget what God had done for them and fail to follow His commandments (Deuteronomy 8:19). Moses reminded them that they had forgotten what God had done, and they had made a god of a golden calf. This account of the calf demonstrated how easily men forgot and were quick to go against God’s word to do what they thought was right in their own eyes (Deuteronomy 9:17).
Sabbath A Remembrance
The sabbath was a remembrance of the Lord. The Lord instructed the Israelites that they are to observe the sabbath and keep it Holy. The practice of sabbath meant that the people would not work on the seventh day of the week, and it was dedicated to the Lord. It was a sign between God and His people that they would know that He sanctifies them (Exodus 31:13). They were supposed to remember that God brought them out of Egypt with a mighty hand (Deuteronomy 5:12-15). One of the commandments was to remember the sabbath day and to keep it holy (Exodus 20:8). So, God instructed them to keep this holy day as a remembrance of Him.
Passover A Remembrance
The Passover was a remembrance of the Lord. When Pharaoh did not want to allow the people of Israel to leave Egypt, God sent several plagues upon the Egyptians. This would demonstrate to Pharaoh that this God was greater than any god he had ever known. So, God told the Israelites to sacrifice a lamb and put its blood on their doorpost, and so the Lord would spare them from the plague (Exodus 12:1-13). God then told them that they should keep this practice as a memorial from that day onwards (Exodus 12:14). The memorial there meant as a record or a remembrance of what God had done. God told them to keep this as a remembrance.
Communion A Remembrance
Communion is a remembrance of the Lord. In the last supper that Jesus had with the disciples before he was crucified, He told them to do this in remembrance of me (Luke 22:19). He broke the bread and told them that this was His body which is given for them and that they should do this to remember this sacrifice. Today we still do communion to remember the most significant sacrifice ever made for each one of us. God told us to keep this remembrance of Him. And maybe He knew that we could easily depart from this truth and so we needed this reminder.
The Word of God – Our Constant Reminder
God gave Moses tablets with the commandments written on them so that they could read it and meditate on it and know it. Later God inspired men to write the Bible, book by book. And we are instructed to read it and meditate on it. We are told that the law of God is perfect reviving the soul, and it is life (Psalm 19). But when we do not read the word of God, we begin to forget everything about God. Our knowledge of God departs from us and it is replaced with the things of the enemy. This draws us further and further away from Him. Blessed is the man who delights in the law of God and meditates on it day and night (Psalm 1:1-6; Joshua 1:8). Psalm 119 tells us to meditate on the word of God and fix our eyes on His ways (Psalm 119:15).
We do not just remember the word when we spend time in it; our faith grows. Faith comes by hearing the word of Christ (Romans 10:17). Our belief in God grows stronger, and we can trust Him easier for more. David said he meditated on all God had done (Psalm 143:5). There is profit in keeping it in our minds. It is beneficial to meditate on it and remember it. The psalmist says he chooses to meditate on God’s statues (commandment, law) while others plot against the Lord (Psalm 119:23).
So, I think that remembrance is incredibly significant when it comes to serving God. Given that God himself gave us so many remembrances, it must be important. We should take time each day to spend time remembering God. We should be remembering Him every moment of our day. We should remember who He is, what He has done and His incredible love for us. We should remember that He is our everything, that He takes care of our every need and that He forgave us and paid the ultimate price to bring us back into His arms. So, let us not disrespect His love towards us. Let us trust in His ways and follow Him. So, let us do the things that keep Him in our minds. Let us read the word, meditate on it, testify of His goodness, fellowship with His children, praise Him and spend time talking to Him.
“17 Beware lest you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.’ 18 You shall remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your fathers, as it is this day. 19 And if you forget the Lord your God and go after other gods and serve them and worship them, I solemnly warn you today that you shall surely perish. 20 Like the nations that the Lord makes to perish before you, so shall you perish, because you would not obey the voice of the Lord your God. – Exodus 8:17-20.”

Thank you Vani for this.
It’s easy to become distracted by the world and the mundane.
Often times one can take things for granted…. but in all things the remembrance of the Lord who giveth all good is pivotal to that inner peace amongst the chaos. Remembering Him always and focusing through the calm and rough waters . 💚
Thank you for your comment. I appreciate it very much.
Remembering does help us to praise God more. Thank you for this exhort Vani. Blessings!
You’re welcome and thank you for your continued support.
It’s so important to remember God’s goodness when we go through our wilderness. It’s hard sometimes but thanks for the encouragement Vani!
You’re welcome. I prayer that God reminds you.
Isaiah 26:3 Thou shalt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee, because he trusts in thee.
Indeed we forget so quickly, so easily, apparently because we tend to pay attention to what ever stands out more glaringly to us. Thus the need to remember The Lord, his goodness, his mercy, grace, etc, so those things become more prominent. Thank you again.
Thank you
