The Son
Matthew 2:13-15
13 And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him. 14 When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt: 15 And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.
Hosea 1:11
When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.
Exodus 4:22-23
And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh, Thus saith the Lord, Israel is my son, even my firstborn: And I say unto thee, Let my son go, that he may serve me: and if thou refuse to let him go, behold, I will slay thy son, even thy firstborn.
Jesus, God’s son, once lived in Egypt, and it says that God called him out of Egypt. But looking at it closely, it also refers to calling his firstborn son, Israel, out of Egypt in the Exodus. He recused Israel out of Egypt and gave him all he needed to live as a free son of God but Israel failed to do this right. Israel was God’s firstborn and was supposed to demonstrate how to be God’s true and faithful son to the rest of the world. But they continuously slipped back into their old ways and sinned against God.
Then Jesus came, the son of God, to show us all how to do it right. He came to do what Israel failed to do. He came to do what we have failed to do. He showed us that we could turn away from sin, love God and serve him. Jesus made it possible for all of us to be able to conquer sin through his sacrifice. But because we have been given free will and are not being forced, we need to choose for ourselves to accept this victory that Jesus has already won. I want to be a faithful and true child of God. I want to show God that I love him and am so grateful for his love for me. I want to make him proud by choosing him and casting away sin. But how do we do this…it is a continuous choice. Each day we wake up is an opportunity for us to choose to be a faithful son or an ungrateful one.
So let us choose wisely. Choose Jesus.
