The Word is God Himself
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God – John 1:1
John tells us that the Word is God himself. Do we really think of this when we approach the Word? Do we understand the significance of the Word? Do I really understand this truth? The next verse refers to the Word as “He”, saying He was in the beginning with God (John1:2). John tells us that all things were made through Him (the Word) (John 1:3). In Him was life (John 1:4). The Word became flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:14). John is telling us that the Word of God is Jesus. John said that the Word of life was made manifest, and he and the other disciples have seen Him (1 John 1:1).
The Word of God is so much more than we realise. The Word is flawless (Psalm 12:6), immortal (Isaiah 40:8; 1 Peter 1:25; Matthew 24:35), alive (Hebrews 4:12), truth (John 17:17), light (Psalm 119:105), the path to purity (Psalm 119:9), wisdom and understanding (Matthew 7:24; Psalm 119:130; Proverbs 2:6), nourishment (1 Peter 2:2; Matthew 4:4; Deuteronomy 8:3), it teaches, rebukes, corrects, trains (2 Timothy 3:16), and it is so much more.
The Word is so complex that no matter how many times we read it, we have something to learn from it. We see more every time we read it. It is so intricate that even though it was written based on an ancient context, about people from such a long time ago, it still applies to each one of us in today’s time and speaks to us about our very personal situations. And it will continue to be relevant to our children and our children’s children until Christ returns. The Word is so amazing that it seems to hide understanding from those with evil intentions. People who want to do the enemy’s work and distract us from God may also read the Bible, but there is so much they do not see in the Word. The true meaning is hidden from them who do not believe (2 Corinthians 4:3-4).
The Bible tells us that the Word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of the soul and of the spirit and discerning the thoughts and intention of the heart (Hebrews 4:12). The Word is living, do we think of the Word as alive? The Word is sharp and able to separate our bad intentions from the good ones. The Word can help us to cut them out of our minds and hearts.
The Bible says that all scriptures are breathed out by God (2 Timothy 3:16). The scriptures come directly from the mouth of God. Our words come from our minds and hearts, and so they embody our nature and being of who we are. God’s words similarly express who He is and what is important to Him. It gives us a glimpse of what’s in His heart. We can know God’s will from His Word.
How do we seek God? One of the ways to seek God is through His word. The Psalmist says with my whole heart I seek you, let me not wonder from your commandments (Psalm 119). God is in His Word, the Word is God Himself.
Thessalonians warns us that the Word of God should not be taken as human words but as the Word of God (1 Thessalonians 2:13). It is not to be taken lightly but to understand that this is significant and comes straight from God. The Lord says that His Word will not return to Him empty, but it accomplishes He purposes (Isaiah 55:11). God’s Word is guaranteed to accomplish His purpose.
The Word of God is God Himself. It is the words that come out of Him, expressing who He is and what is important to Him. It tells us His desires and His purposes. It can transform us. Therefore, consider this the next time you are reading the Word of God (which I hope is soon). You are reading something that has the very power of God, that is living and active, that will not return empty, and it is God Himself.
May this Psalm be a reflection of our Prayer for more of the Word of God.
Psalm 119:33-40
33Teach me, O Lord, the way of your statutes; and I will keep it to the end. 34 Give me understanding, that I may keep your law and observe it with my whole heart. 35 Lead me in the path of your commandments, for I delight in it. 36 Incline my heart to your testimonies, and not to selfish gain! 37 Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways. 38 Confirm to your servant your promise, that you may be feared. 39 Turn away the reproach that I dread, for your rules are good. 40 Behold, I long for your precepts; in your righteousness give me life!
