Tree Planted by Water
Jeremiah 17
Thus says the Lord:
“Cursed is the man who trusts in man
and makes flesh his strength,[a]
whose heart turns away from the Lord.
6 He is like a shrub in the desert,
and shall not see any good come.
He shall dwell in the parched places of the wilderness,
in an uninhabited salt land.
7 “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord,
whose trust is the Lord.
8 He is like a tree planted by water,
that sends out its roots by the stream,
and does not fear when heat comes,
for its leaves remain green,
and is not anxious in the year of drought,
for it does not cease to bear fruit.”
Psalm 1
Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
2 but his delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night.
3 He is like a tree
planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers.
4 The wicked are not so,
but are like chaff that the wind drives away.
When a tree is planted near water, it has all that it needs to survive; even when drought comes, it can thrive. When the heat is all around it, the tree will not wither once it has its water. Likewise, when we depend on man and ourselves, we fail when hard times come, but when we trust in God and devour his word, we will surely be ready for any and every challenge that comes our way. The scriptures above from Jeremiah and Psalms explains this.
John 1
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life,[a] and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
Whether we know it or not, the source of our lives is God and John tells us that the word is God. He shows us that God is life to us. The word is life to us. The word, to me, seems to be the most tangible way we can seek God. When we prayerfully open up the word of God, we come to hear all that he has to tell us, and we learn about who he is. We can hear from his heart, and we come to meet Him. When we spend time in the word, which gets embedded in our hearts, God is always with us. The word gives us life and sustains us even when facing the most difficult times. When we hold on to his word, we can come through anything thriving.
