Delight in the LORD
Psalms 37:4
Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.
Isaiah 58:13-14
If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.
Psalms 37:4 tells us to delight thyself in the Lord, and he shall give thee the desires of thy heart. But what does this mean? To be pleased with the things of God? To pleasingly spend time with him and in his word. To pleasingly do his bidding?
But Isaiah 58 says if the people of God honour him not by finding their pleasure and speaking their own words, then shall they delight in the Lord. And then shall the Lord bless them.
The Bible here says that you delight in the Lord by not doing your own thing but putting yourself aside, your desires aside and doing the bidding of the Lord.
Furthermore, Isaiah 58:7-8 says if the people of God fed the hungry, took care of the poor and the naked, then shall they be greatly blessed with health and righteousness.
It’s saying that delighting in the Lord is putting ourselves aside and taking care of those in need. God cares for all on earth (1 Peter 5:7). He wants none to perish, and he wants us to help bring them back to Him (2 Peter 3:9). And what better way to show the suffering people of the world who God is than to love them with the love that God has poured out unto us.
But yet, we find ourselves daily thinking of ourselves. We pass the person begging outside without lifting a finger. Oh, how much we have failed Him. But it’s not too late; let us fix it now.
