Prayer
We know that we should pray, but a reminder is always helpful. We need reminders. I recently noticed that I was getting a lot of reminders about prayer and that had me thinking about improving my prayer life. We need to take everything to the Lord. He is our everything, and so in everything, we need to remember to pray. This should be our default and the natural choice at every point and every circumstance.
Prayer Reminder: ABCDE
- Always—We should pray always. We should have specific times to pray daily, but we should also pray every time we are reminded of something to pray about.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 – Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you
- Believe – We should believe when we pray because we know that God is able to do anything beyond our imagination.
Mark 11:24 – Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
- Confess and be Effective – Confess so that we may be healed and let us be righteous, i.e. blameless and holy. Let us purpose in our hearts to do good and not sin. Let us pray with a true heart.
James 5:16 – Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.
- Door – He said to shut the door and prayer in secret. And we also see many examples of praying with others. So let us pray on both sides of the door.
Matthew 6:6 – But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
- Everything – Pray about everything. We should pray with thanksgiving for our every concern, especially for the people around us (friends, family and neighbours).
Philippians 4:6 – Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God
I heard a pastor say this week that when we spend time in prayer, we spend less time doing negative things that can pull us away from God. So, let us spend more time drawing closer to God.
Lastly, I will share this photo below of a prayer wheel I got in church, and hopefully, it could be helpful. It’s not something I would follow precisely, but I think it’s a great reminder of what and how to pray, especially when we don’t know where to start.
