It is for us, not Him
The Bible urges us to prayer and to bring our concerns to God (Philippians 4:6). It says that we should give thanks. It says to praise Him for He is great and worthy (Psalm 100:4-5). It says that we are to rejoice in the Lord (Philippians 4:4). He told us to forgive just as He has forgiven us (Colossians 3:13).
He told us to be poor in spirit, which is that realization that we are nothing without God (Matthew 5:3). He told us to be gentle, kind-hearted, sweet-spirited and have self-control (Matthew 5:5). He told us to hunger and thirst for righteousness, that is those who actively seek right standing with God (Matthew 5:6). He told us to be merciful (Matthew 5:7). He told us to have a pure heart, that is to have integrity and a godly character (Matthew 5:8). He told us to be makers and maintainers of peace (Matthew 5:9). He told us to do what is right even when we may be persecuted (Matthew 5:10). He told us to represent Him well, even when we are insulted and persecuted because of Him (Matthew 5:11). He told us to love others just as we love our selves (Matthew 22:39).
He tells us to read and meditate on His word (Joshua 1:8; 2 Timothy 3:16-17; Psalm 119:105).
When we do these things, it does not benefit God, it is not something He needs. What it does is it benefits us.
It builds us,
grows us,
uplifts us,
reminds us,
renews our minds, and
helps us be better children of God.
It benefits us so much, even in ways we do not fully understand.
So, I write this as a reminder for myself and you, to:
Read the word, pray, praise, express gratitude, love our neighbours and love God. We do this because we love God, but it also greatly helps us grow closer to Him and be more like Jesus.
